Basic Information

The Structural Materials Laboratory was established “informally” in 1992 by the memorable Professor E. N. Mastroyiannis, and formally in 2004, with an aim at promoting teaching and research in the field of mechanics and technology of materials used in civil engineering structures.

Teaching and research activities in the Laboratory are focused in the following areas:

  • development and application of advanced composite materials
  • development and application of high-performance concrete (self-compacting, fibre-reinforced, lightweight, high-strength)
  • concrete technology
  • non-destructive evaluation of materials and structural members
  • behaviour of structural steel, wood and wood-based products
  • mechanics and technology of masonry and mortars
  • lightweight foam-based insulation materials

Regarding the Laboratory facilities:

  • Mechanical testing of materials and structural elements takes place in the Main Testing Area
  • Preparatory works and mortars/concrete technology tests are realized in the Preparation Area
  • Testing of fire resistance of building materials and components take place in the Fire Testing Facility Building nearby

The equipment in the Laboratory includes:

  • Tension, compression, bending and torsion testing machines
  • Strong frame for biaxial testing under simulated seismic loading
  • Strain and displacement measuring devices
  • Non-destructive testing equipment
  • Concrete and mortar technology equipment
  • Guarded hot plate apparatus for calculating coefficient of thermal conductivity 'λ'
  • Freeze - thaw testing chamber
  • Vertical furnace (int. dimension 3x3x1.2m) and capacity 1350 C for fire resistance tests

Additional Information

Laboratory Personnel

Currently the personnel of the Structural Materials Laboratory comprises of 2 faculty members, a part-time instructor, a technical associate, as well as multiple doctoral, postgraduate and under-graduate students carrying out their diploma thesis work.

Laboratory Services

In collaboration with the University Liaison Office, the Laboratory offers also specialized services to private enterprises and public organizations, relevant to testing and evaluation of materials and structural elements.

Our newest facility

Fire Testing Facility

The Fire Testing Facility is the most recent addition to the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Patras. It is the first and currently the only laboratory infrastructure in Greece country capable of supporting:

  • research,
  • education,
  • technology transfer, and
  • service provision

in the field of fire resistance of building materials and components.
